Hello
I was born in London in 1936 and migrated to Australia in the late fifties settling in Queensland. I became an Aussie in 1991. I’ve lived on the Gold Coast since 1960 and love the life style and networks I’ve established here especially in the art community. I joined the Gold Coast Sculptors’ Society in 1982 and was President of this organisation several times.
See http://www.sculptorsgoldcoast.org.au I've organised exhibitions here and internationally including tours to Japan and Korea where I’ve also sold my work.
One exciting activities is helping to arrange cultural exchanges with Japanese, Korean and Turkish artists. These events have shaped new creative directions in my work.
I love teaching painting and sculpture and sharing the creative experience with people of all ages, talents and aspirations. I teach for the Society of Sculptors and also privately. Some students have been working with me for more than a decade and I welcome new students.
Clay sculpture appeals to me, it's such a tactile and malleable medium for expressing my vision. Working with steel has a different appeal. I love the abstraction inherent in steel sculpture. Sometimes I feel sculpture is more rewarding than painting, it’s truer to itself, being three dimensional, so what you see is what you get, and the composition needs to work from multiple perspectives. A painting is two-dimensional so any painted representation is naturally more illusory.
I'm often challenged to discover the most appropriate image for the creative inspirations or ideas I want to convey. For example, in a painting I called “Reversed economy with economic bubbles” I’m trying to convey a complex of ideas about economic structures and the inequalities that arise from them whether in a capitalist or a control economy. For the working individual he or she can feel like they’re supporting the whole system by their labor while still having to suffer the up and downs of bubbles and busts.
You'll love the friendly and very reasonably priced art classes I teach at two venues on Queensland's Gold Coast.
Every Tuesday is sculpture morning at the Sculptor Society's rooms in Benowa (http://www.sculptorsgoldcoast.org.au)
And every Friday morning I teach painting as well as sculpture in Elanora.
I've been studying painting and sculpture with Tony Dowers for seven years. The cat and head examples shown above were early works he assisted me with.
He's hands on when needed and otherwise encourages us to play and experiment from the well of our own creative urges.
I highly recommend Tony's teaching style, his very broad art knowledge and the bantering fun we have in our groups. He makes good coffee too!
